Guyanese accused of bribery in Georgia

A Guyanese man is now facing charges after he allegedly attempted to bribe an official during a test at a Department of Drivers Services office in Georgia, the online version the US News 12 said.

According to the report Parmanand Sookraj, 57, who only became naturalized as a US citizen in February last, kept offering the official a US $100 bill during the driving portion of the test, which he was failing. Even though the worker repeatedly declined Sookraj’s offer more money was offered back at the office.

The report said the examiner called the police and an investigator responded and sat behind Sookraj at the office.

When Sookraj was called to the counter and told he had failed, the investigator saw Sookraj put down a US $20 bill and another US $150 in cash. Sookraj allegedly told the examiner that the money was for him. When the worker asked what he meant, investigators say Sookraj asked that he be allowed to pass the test.

Sookraj faces one count of bribery of a government official.
Government officials are now checking if the bribery charge could impact Sookraj’s immigration status. Georgia law says people convicted of bribery can be punished with a fine of up to US $5,000 or one to 20 years in prison.
