The Lethem resident who drowned on Tuesday after his tractor toppled into a trench at Georgia Pasture, Cane Grove, Mahaica had threatened to kill himself earlier this year following a domestic squabble, relatives say.
Edgar Khan, the caretaker of Sundarban Cattle Ranch died moments after inflicting a beating on his reputed wife of two years.
Speaking via telephone, one of the man’s three children, Jennifer, told Stabroek News that she suspects that he committed suicide, explaining that her father knows how to operate a tractor well. She said that in April of this year, the 45-year-old Khan had threatened to commit suicide following an argument with the woman identified as Lorna of Karasabai, Region Nine.
She recalled that it was a relative who informed her that he had died after falling from a tractor. According the Jennifer the couple who had started living at the ranch shortly after they began a relationship were both intoxicated on the day of the incident.
Her father, she added, drank a lot.
Jennifer said that relatives have been unable to contact Lorna on her cellular phone. The woman had contacted Khan’s mother shortly after the incident occurred and the elderly woman told her that she wanted to speak with her. That was the last time they heard from Lorna.
According to reports, around 11 am the couple had an argument and an angry Khan jumped into the tractor and sped off.
He then reportedly lost control and toppled into the trench. He died while efforts were being made to free him. He managed to drive about 150 metres around a bend before the mishap occurred.
Khan’s body will be transported to Lethem tomorrow for burial.
He also leaves to mourn his parents Maria and Kenneth.
