Fifty-eight Region Three teachers have been enrolled in an 18-month Education Management Certificate Programme.
In his address at the orientation exercise at the West Demerara Secondary School Regional Vice Chairman Manpersaud said there is an urgent need to boost the management of our educational institutions. According to a press release he pointed out that over the years there have been great improvements in examination results as well as in the availability of infrastructure but he lamented that many school administrators were not managing the affairs of the schools effectively.
Manpersaud also said that “…very often heads do not take their responsibility seriously…lateness and absenteeism are two areas which need to be corrected.” He then urged the teachers to complete the course and to put into practice the techniques that they learn.
In her remarks, Regional Education Officer Marlyn Jones-O’Donoghue urged the participants to keep abreast with current issues in the education system in order to function effectively. She told the inductees that the programme is geared to enrich their abilities and they are lucky to have been chosen to participate.
Jones-O’Donoghue also told the teachers that completing the programme would help them to overcome challenges that are ahead.
