President Bharrat Jagdeo says that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) will be provided with all the resources it needs to conduct next year’s general elections.
“There will be enough funds,” the President said when asked today at a press conference at the Office of the President.
He, however, stressed that while using the resources the Commission will have to abide by the country’s laws.
Meanwhile, the Head of State said that while GECOM is an independent body it is still required to adhere to the laws of the land. He rejected suggestions that the recent directive from Office of the President to GECOM on the placement of advertisements was encroaching on the body’s independence. He said that the government was concerned with the manner the Commission had been procuring some items.
Jagdeo said too that the directive was only connected to procurement by the body and not to voter education. The President said that all forms of media should be used in the voter education campaign.
