GDF recovers weapon, soldier for court-martial

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has recovered a weapon which was reported missing during a training exercise involving its troops.

“Search parties were dispatched and conducted several diligent searches using metal detectors and similar devices”, the GDF said in a statement yesterday. It did not say what type of weapon it was or when it went missing. “The missing weapon was subsequently found today (yesterday) in a part of the training area that had not been previously searched”, the statement said. The statement indicated that a soldier would be court-martialled but provided no details.

In recent years, 30 AK-47’s as well as some handguns disappeared from the GDF and some were eventually recovered from criminals.
