Canoe Federation holds practice session

As part of its bi-monthly training programme the Guyana Canoe Federation (GCF) held another practice session at the Coverden Marina on Saturday.

According to a press release, the session, which began at noon, was just one of many follow up programmes which is building on the recent visit of Canadian Coach, Robert Stott.

Stott was sent by the International Canoe Federation last April for a 10-day training stint.
According to the release, Stott had visited several areas suitable for the development of the sport, including Linden, Coverden Marina on the Demerara River, Bonasika, Aliki, Main Stay and Wakapau.

“The coach was extremely impressed with the excellent participation by the young people from the various communities, and saw great potential in many.

“He was able to assist persons in their paddling and balancing techniques in using the Kayak, and has promised additional equipment will be sent to further encourage this wonderful sport in Guyana,” the release stated.

President of the GCF, Maurice Amres has pledged his commitment to see the growth of the sport in Guyana since it “definitely is another fantastic outlet for young people in the various interior regions in Guyana to participate”, the release stated.
Participants at Saturday’s session came from Santa Mission, Aratack Mission, Linden, Bonasika, Sandhills and the Guyana Defence Force, the release stated.
