A 30-year-old man accused of damaging a window of the Discount Store was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $75,000 when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation is that on October 24 at Georgetown, Mark Persaud unlawfully and maliciously damaged one glass window valued $180,000 property of Lolita Beepaul.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge of malicious damage to property when it was read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey in giving the facts of the case said that on the day in question, the virtual complainant (VC) was standing outside her residence when the defendant picked up a brick and threw it in the direction of her house causing the window to break. According to Harvey, the accused then made good his escape on foot before being captured and arrested by the police.
The unrepresented defendant when given a chance to respond however explained to the court that it was someone from inside the woman’s yard who first threw a brick at him and as a result he decided to pelt back breaking the window in the process.
The accused who said that he works as a handy man for the VC told the court that he also lives at the store located at the corner of Regent and Wellington streets. He added that recently, he and his boss have been having problems.
The magistrate then ordered a probation report into the matter. Persaud was later granted $75,000 bail and ordered to return to court on November 16.
