BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbados coach Emmerson Trotman says he believes fast bowler Tino Best and batsman Ryan Hinds still have a role to play in West Indies cricket.
Neither player was selected for the three-Test tour of Sri Lanka starting next month, despite creditable performances in recent tournaments. The right-armer Best was the leading performer for Barbados in the recent WICB One-Day Championship, picking up 10 wickets at an average of 10.10 per scalp.
In the four-day championship, he snatched 17 wickets at 28.05 to help Barbados finish second behind eventual champions Jamaica.
“With the state of our cricket at the moment, I think we need everyone,” Trotman said. “Tino is still a young man. If he can maintain his discipline, I don’t see any reason why he cannot be selected.” Hinds, meanwhile, was also overlooked in the squad despite scoring 446 runs in the first class tournament at an average of 44.
His left-arm spin, which has come on in leaps and bounds, earned him 16 wickets then and brought him another 10 in the just concluded tournament.
“I would hope that they will never close the doors on Ryan Hinds because he showed that he is hungry and he is eager to retain a place back in the West Indies cricket team,” Trotman said.
“He’s doing well with both bat and ball and he fielded extremely well in this tournament. He’s quite fit and there is no reason why he shouldn’t be back in the West Indies side.”
The 29-year-old Hinds has played 15 Tests and 14 One-Day Internationals but has made just 95 runs in seven innings.
