Despite a hat-trick from Deon Carew, Police Hockey team dealt defending second division champions, Western Dragons, a surprising defeat Thursday night in the GT&T National Indoor Hockey Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Carew scored the opening goal off a penalty corner in the sixth minute as the Dragons gained an early lead.
The Police team which recently returned to competitive hockey established themselves as a force to be reckoned with when they countered with a field goal by Anton Duke three minutes later.
Dragons regained the lead when Selwyn Brandt converted a penalty corner in the 12th minuteand Carew scored off another penalty corner one minute later.
Police closed the gap in the 14th minute with a field goal from Runford Liverpool.
Carew then stitched in his hat trick four minutes before half time.While the Dragons appeared to have lost steam at this juncture, the lawmen were just getting warmed up. They struck back with a double by Dwight McCalman just before half time, to tie the game 4 –4.
Six minutes into the second half Duke scored his second goal to give the Police a one goal lead which they held on to for the win.
In the other second division match of the evening pool leaders, the Hikers defeated Old Fort 4 – 0. Akeem Thompson, Randy Hope, Colonel ‘Scooby’ Haywood and Joel Hunte scored a goal apiece for the Hikers.
The GCC first division team won their first match of the competition, against Old Fort 4-2.
The GCC Tigers women’s team secured themselves a spot in the final with a 3 – 1 win over the Spartans. Shebiki Baptiste, Tricia Fiedtkou and Trisha Woodroffe each scored one for the Tigers while Marzana Fiedtkou, scored the Spartans only goal.
And the GCC veterans dished out a 12 – 4 defeat to Old Fort earlier in the evening while their Under-19 side demolished the Old Fort juniors 8-0.
