A 64-year-old Guyanese teacher who was earlier this year slapped with a charge of indecently assaulting one of his students in the Bahamas was acquitted last Friday.
According to The Eleutheran, Dr John Persaud, who taught at the Albury High School in South Eleuthera, was acquitted after the magistrate found insufficient evidence and supported a no-case submission by the man’s lawyer, Jairam Mangra.
Persaud was slapped with the charge in May of this year when it was alleged that he committed the act. The prosecution, according to the news organisation, has since given notice of filing an appeal.
According to the report, Persaud has been teaching Social Sciences and History for the past 40 years with 17 of those years spent on Eleuthera Island.
He was awarded the Bahamas Master Teacher status in the first round of applicants when the distinguished designation was first introduced to the Bahamas education system.
