Gavin Lewis suffers first defeat in two years
After a two-year unbeaten streak in junior boys tennis, Gavin Lewis was beaten in the semi-finals of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA)/Nigel’s Supermarket Junior Classic Tennis Tournament on Saturday.
Lewis was handed a 4 – 2, 2 – 4, 7 – 4 whipping by Saevion David-Longe in the boys’ 18 years and under category.
With Lewis out of the way, second-seed Daniel Lopes romped to his first title in four years emerging with a 7 – 6 (7 – 5), 6 – 3 triumph against David-Longe.
Lewis later told Stabroek Sport that he was disappointed with his loss to David-Longe but promised to make amends at the upcoming Pegasus Open tournament.
Lewis told Stabroek Sport that while he had a game plan, he also made many mistakes which resulted in his defeat to David-Longe.
“It feels pretty depressing, and I guess it was pretty much my game planning that went wrong. I had expected good amount of competition from Saevion but I never thought I would have lost. I was making a lot of mistakes and that gave him a lot of the points, I wasn’t consistent and that saw me losing,” Lewis explained.
Lopes said he felt the title triumph was a bit watered down since he did not get a chance to prove himself against Lewis.
“It would have felt so much better if I had beaten Gavin to win, “Lopes said adding that he hoped to get that opportunity when as he goes after the title at the Pegasus Open.
