A man who physically abused the mother of his child was yesterday handed a three-month prison sentence when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Thirty-eight-year-old Cleveland London of Six West Ruimveldt, GDF Housing Scheme admitted that on October 31 at Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Candace Barrington so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey who presented the facts of the case said that on the day in question, Barrington had taken their son to London’s house when a heated argument over maintenance of the child ensued.
According to Harvey, the argument escalated when London became physically abusive.
After listening to the facts of the case, the acting chief magistrate told the defendant that he would be sentenced to a three-month prison term.
London calmly stepped out of the docks and proceeded towards the chute to exit the courtroom. By this time, however, the virtual complainant who was present at court told the magistrate that she didn’t want to proceed with the matter against the man, indicating that she wanted it to end.
In tears, after hearing that the father of her child would be imprisoned, Barrington who began sobbing uncontrollably mumbled, “Please my worship, ah just want done the matter. I ain’t want proceed with it no more.”
Sewnarine-Beharry who by this time had already made her decision and handed down sentencing, calmly told the woman, “It is over now, he has been sentenced.”
Still crying, Barrington stressed, “I ain’t want proceed with the matter against he.”
“It’s too late for that now,” the magistrate stated.
A composed London then calmly made his way through the chute and out of the court.
