A clothes vendor who is accused of stealing a cell phone from a woman was on Monday granted $30,000 bail when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The allegation is that on October 27 at Georgetown, Jason Helliger of 29 Independence Boulevard stole from Jean Lall one cell phone valued $40,000, property of the said Jean Lall.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny from the person when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey in giving the facts of the case said that on the day in question, the woman was walking along the road when the defendant snatched the phone from her hands and escaped in motor vehicle PMM 4563.
According to Harvey, a chase was given by public-spirited citizens and subsequently the man was arrested.
In his defence, the unrepresented Helliger said that he is innocent of the charge for which he stands accused.
“I din do it,” he said.
The prosecution had no objection to the accused being granted his pretrial liberty. Helliger was later granted bail in the sum of $30,000. His matter was transferred to Court Three for November 8 for fixture and trial.
