Dear Editor,
Last month a woman died in the Skeldon Hospital. This woman was Esther Dwarka-Bowlin, an extraordinary person in all sense of the word. Merely 28 years of age, she had vast experience teaching at the nursery level. The level was so high that she was chosen to act in the capacity of headmistress. This young woman was one who believed in education as the key that opens all doors. So strong was her belief in this mantra that for someone with so many accomplishments she chose to further her own education at the University of Guyana Tain Campus pursuing a Bachelor’s degree.
The circumstances of her untimely demise are still murky. What has so far been made clear is that she delivered a baby boy and suffered some complications in her delivery. Having delivered two healthy children before – a boy, 3, and a girl, almost 2 years of age, this should have been nothing intimidating for this extraordinary woman. Whatever took place at that hospital is still a mystery today.
The University of Guyana Students Society expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends, students and classmates of Mrs Esther Dwarka-Bowlin. The loss that has been suffered cannot be fully comprehended. Children are now without a mother and a school is without a leader; they are the ones who can put a value on her life. After having already devoted so much to the community and her profession, surely her contribution would have been limitless.
However, Mrs Dwarka-Bowlin’s death should not be in vain. The University of Guyana Students Society therefore condemns any malpractice or poor service that may have caused the death of this woman. How can we allow someone so valuable to pass away as a consequence of inappropriate or inadequate care and remain silent?
Yours faithfully,
