A 22-year-old man accused of using a knife to rob another of a gold chain near Stabroek Market was on Monday remanded to prison when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The allegation against Kevin Washington is that on October 30, being armed with a knife, he robbed Khemraj Deonarine of a gold chain valued $50,000.
The accused was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of robbery under arms.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question the virtual complainant was walking in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market when he was accosted by the defendant, who placed a knife to his neck, snatched the chain and ran away.
According to Harvey, an alarm was raised which saw public-spirited citizens pursuing the accused who was later arrested. Washington was remanded to prison and his matter transferred to Court Five for November 8.
