Several roads would be closed this evening and tomorrow to facilitate Diwali observances in and around the city.
According to a release from the police, a Diwali motorcade will commence at 18:00h today and it will leave the Shri Krishna Mandir in Campbellville proceeding west on Sandy Babb Street, north into J.B. Singh Road, east into Clive Lloyd Drive, into Rupert Craig Highway and along the East Coast Public Road to the LBI Community Centre Ground, East Coast Demerara.
And in order to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted movement of the motorcade, the police have advised that motorists viewing the motorcade should ensure that their vehicles are properly parked on the parapets and pedestrians are asked not to cross the roads in front of or between the motorcade.
Pedal cyclists and motor cyclists are asked not to ride alongside the motorcade.
Further, the release said, to facilitate the motorcade the following roads will be closed to vehicular traffic from 18:00h today:
(a) From Vlissengen Road/Clive Lloyd Drive to LBI, ECD (northern carriageway).
(b) Sheriff Street between David Street and Rupert Craig Highway.
(c) Vehicles travelling east on Carifesta Avenue will turn south on Vlissengen Road.
In addition no vehicles will be allowed to park on the northern side of the northern carriageway from Clive Lloyd Drive/Rupert Craig Highway unto LBI, ECD.
Meanwhile, the police said that in order to facilitate the smooth conduct of Diwali celebrations at the Vishnu Mandir in Alexander Village, East Bank Demerara tomorrow, motor vehicles will not be permitted beyond the following points from 15:00h:
(a) Ruimveldt Public Road & First Street, Alexander Village. (No entry east)
(b) West Ruimveldt Front Road & First Street, Alexander Village. (No entry south)
(c) Cross Street & Mandela Avenue. (No entry north)
The police said that any inconvenience caused is regretted.
