Soca Warriors shut out Guyana

(Trinidad Guardian) T&T Soca Warriors sealed a spot in the Digicel Caribbean Cup Finals scheduled for Martinique later this month, after a 2-0 win over Guyana in their second round Group F match at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella last night. T&T, eight-time winners of the Caribbean Football Union title and ten-time finalists now joins host Martinique (1993 champions), four-time winners and defending champions Jamaica, 2008 runner-up Grenada and Guadeloupe as qualifiers for the finals which takes place from November 26 to December 5.

T&T dominated the game in front of their home crowd but did not get the opening goal until the 35th minute through Lester ‘Corn Curls’ Peltier. He ran down the right side and made an intended cross that beat Guyanese goalkeeper Ronson Williams. Then on the stroke of half time, the man with the golden boots, Devon Jorsling got his fourth goal of the tournament to give T&T a 2-0 cushion going into the change rooms. Fellow striker Jamal Gay set Jorsling up on the left side of the goal and his shot home past a hapless Williams.

In the second half, Gay missed to clear cut chances early on as T&T could have extended the lead well beyond the two-goal margin. However in the end the Guyanese defence held firm and the game ended 2-0. With the win, T&T improved to maximum six points from two matches ahead of tomorrow’s final group match against Haiti at the same venue from 6.30 pm. In yesterday’s first match, 2006 champions Haiti defeated St Vincent and the Grenadines 3-1.
