The first inter schools table tennis competition under the new Henry Greene administration served off yesterday at the National Gymnasium with Greene promising “more tournaments to come.”
“We’re promoting table tennis in schools out of schools…. we want to provide an opportunity for table tennis to be played so as to keep young people away from other things that are less productive,” Greene told the gathering yesterday.
The new president of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), Greene, added, ”There are more tournaments to come and I hope that many of you will become national players eventually,” he declared while indicating that the present general secretary of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe, was the current national men’s singles champion.
Green indicated that there would be lots of prizes including book awards and cash incentives for the tournament which ends tomorrow.
Earlier, Munroe said that the staging of the tournament involved youths who were critical to the success of the GTTA.
“You, the youths are critical to the future of the GTTA, you represent the future. This tournament is an initial start to a lot of programme, a lot of things in store for you,” Munroe told the gathering of students from nine schools around the country.
He told the students to have fun and advised them to play the game with enthusiasm and discipline.
Munroe, who acknowledged the presence of Commander of `A’ Division, George Vyphius, apologized for the absence of the Minister of Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony and the Director of Sport Neil Kumar who he said had prior engagements.
