Guyana left it until the final night but sneaked into the finals of the Digicel Caribbean Cup after their southern Caribbean neighbours Trinidad and Tobago hammered Haiti 4-0 at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Trinidad on Saturday.
Going into the final round Guyana needed to beat St. Vincent and the Grenadines by three clear goals and hope that the Soca Warriors defeated Haiti.
Everything went according to plan somewhat as Guyana, through strikes from Devon Millington and Sean Cammeron, whipped SVG 2-0 and then sat and saw the Soca Warriors slam Haiti 4-0 a win which allowed Guyana to go through as runners-up of Group F.
This is the second time that Guyana has reached the finals stage of the tournament.
T&T finished as winners of the group after Hughton Hector scored a pair of first-half goals to book the Warriors’ spot in the Digicel Caribbean Cup Finals scheduled for Martinique later this month.
The win by the Soca Warriors matched its biggest ever against the French-speaking country since a 6-1 triumph in Port-of-Spain in 1999.
The Soca Warriors, seven-time Caribbean champions (1989, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999) and 10-time qualifiers for the finals, will now join host Martinique and Grenada and the winner of the Group G qualifiers (Antigua & Barbuda, Cuba, Dominica and Suriname) in the same group for the Finals.
Guyana, which ended in second spot ahead of the Haitians on goal-difference will compete in the other group with defending champion and four-time winners’ Jamaica, Guadeloupe and the Group G runner-up in the other group.
