A Brazilian teen accused of having a quantity of cocaine in his possession at Lethem was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation is that on November 2 at Tabatinga, Lethem, Anderson Sá Moreira had in his possession one gramme of cocaine.
The 18-year-old pleaded not guilty.
Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes who represented the accused told the court that his client had left his Manaus, Brazil home to purchase a quantity of merchandise at Lethem for his parents when he was stopped on his way back to Brazil and searched by the police when “they [the police] claimed that the illegal substance was found on the lad.”
The accused who had to be provided with an interpreter was told by Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry that he will be remanded to prison until today.
