The 16-year-old boy accused of murdering 18-year-old Dwayne Durant on the Kitty Seawall on November 4 was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Meanwhile, another teen, also 16, is accused of attempting to commit a felony. The allegation is that on the same day, he attempted to steal from the person of Trevor Barrow one gold chain, property of the said Trevor Barrow.
Barrow was in the company of Durant at the time of the incident. For legal reasons the two teens cannot be named.
The murder accused was not required to plead to the capital offence when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate.
He was ordered to return to court on November 22. Meantime, the teen charged with attempting to commit a felony pleaded not guilty to the charge and was admitted to bail in the sum of $50,000 and ordered to return to court on December 1.
The matters were heard in-camera and the defendants were both represented by attorney-at-law Glenn Hanoman. On the day in question, Durant, along with Barrow and other friends had gone to the Georgetown Seawall to view the Diwali motorcade.
Durant was stabbed to his neck while Barrow was reportedly stabbed in the abdomen during the same altercation which claimed Durant’s life.
Kijanna Wharton, a friend of the slain youth related to Stabroek News that Durant and the two accused along with a third person had an ongoing issue which escalated into the events of Thursday last.
