– Second Guinness Greatest of the Street officially launched; kicks off tonight
The second edition of the Guinness `Greatest of the Street’ Futsal competition was officially launched yesterday at Banks DIH, Thirst park.
The competition will kick off tonight at the Albouys-town Court, Indepen-dence Boulevard from 6pm.
Sales and Marketing Manager of Bank DIH Limited, Carlton Joao, at the opening ceremony said that the tournament was back by special request.
“Due to the response from the public which the event got in the 2008 we have no choice but to come with the second edition,” Joao told the gathering.
He added: “Indeed, we have seen football grow from strength to strength and we at Banks would like to make sure it does so in a structured way. Once again we are very proud to be associated with the competition because Banks is embedded in the areas that participate in the tournament.”
Joao said he hoped that the teams in tournament would be fully supported by their respective areas.
“We hope that fair play is portrayed through the tournament and we are urging the public to come out and support their respective areas as they compete for bragging rights.”
The tournament features 32 street teams from around Georgetown who will battle for the top prize of $500,000.
Hope Street Tiger Bay defeated Albouystown Town in the final in 2008 to be crowned the Greatest of the Street.
The runner up prizes are $300,000, $150,000 and $50,000 for second, third and fourth while there are also individual prizes up for grabs such as Most Valuable Player (MVP), Highest Goal Scorer and Most Disciplined team.
The 32 teams are divided into eight groups which has four teams; they are:
Group A – Albouystown A, West Back Road, Kingston and Fourth Street Alberttown
Group B – Alexander Street, North – Last Entrance, Sophia, Albouystown B
Group C – Broad Street A, Queen Street – Tiger Bay, Yarrowkabra, Tucville Big Yard
Group D – East Front Road, Broad Street B, Globe Yard, Festival City
Group E – East La Pentience, Stevedore Scheme, Durban Street Lodge, Punt Trench
Group F – Leopold Street, Front road west Ruimveldt, Alexander Village, Kitty
Group G – North East La Pentience, Drysdale Street, Campbellville, Meadow Brook Square
Group H – Hope Street Tiger Bay, Borton Street – Werk-en-Rust, Back Circle A, Plaisance.
