North Georgetown District 11 is the indisputable winner in the swimming segment of the National Schools’ Championships held on Tuesday at the Castellani Swimming Pool.
It has been confirmed that District 11 accumulated 438 points, taking the lead in this segment of the finals. Jam-packed with national swimmers, District 11 captured a whopping 37 first place positions from the 48 events that were conducted. They also sealed six second place positions and two third place finishes.
Trailing behind them Linden’s District 10 secured second place with 253 points, Bartica’s District 7 finished third with 163 points, and East Georgetown District 12, with 158 points, placed fourth. District 13 placed sixth with 128 points and District 9 followed with 119 points. They were the only other districts to obtain three-digit scores. With a maximum of three events per participant District 11 had a powerful team as maximum wins were garnered by national swimmers Britany van Lange, Ronaldo Rodrigues, Athena Gaskin, Jaime Jabar, Steffi DeNobrega and Travis Henry among others.
Competing in the girls under 16 category, Van Lange dominated the freestyle swims, winning the 100m distance off a 1:06.96s finish, the 50m in 31.18s and she copped another win in the 50m breaststroke clocking 41.29. In the same category, Soroya Simmons won the 50m butterfly in 36.94s and the 50m backstroke in 36.15s.
In the boys’ meet Rodrigues, won the 50m backstroke (34.53s), the 50m breaststroke (35.09s) and the 50m butterfly (29.69s).
In the open category, Gaskin won the 100m backstroke in 1:25.35s, the 50m breaststroke in 41:56s and the 50m butterfly in 35:75s. In the boys open category Jabar churned out leading performances in the 50m butterfly (29.33s), the 50m breaststroke (33.78s) and the 50m freestyle (27.89s).
In addition, DeNobrega and team-mate Athena Foo captured District 11 wins in the girls under 18 division, while Mark Jardim worked the category on the boys’ side. DeNobrega led the 50m breaststroke, clocking 41.09s and in the 100m freestyle she clocked 1:16.44s, finishing off the 50m freestyle in 35.39s. Jardim won the 100m backstroke in 1:22.61s, though his 31:39s was not enough to cop the first place in the 50m butterfly and he was pushed to second behind District 13’s Joseph Seguine who won off a 30.49s finish.
