Already a record holder, Michael Walcott yesterday chronicled another in the male teachers 21 – 30 javelin throw when he cleared a distance of 48.87m to win the category in the National Schools’ Championships currently being held at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Erasing the 17 year old 46.23m record held by Lancelot Loncke, Walcott added a third record to his coffer, having already set the current records for the male teachers under-21 javelin and discus.
And with that Walcott added some important points to that accumulated by District Six, which at the end of 44 final events were leading with 172 points accrued.
Following District Six was North Georgetown District 11 that stood with 163.5 points. They were closely followed by Berbice District Five that had 153 points, Linden District 10 took fourth with 133.5 points, while District Nine amassed 128.5 to stand in fifth.
Meanwhile in yesterday’s events, the day was given a satisfying close with the finals of the 200m events and the 4x400m open relays.
Ashley Tasher won the girls under 14 category of the 200m, while in the under-18 category Letitia Myles ended third in the race after failing to overcome the speed of District 10’s Keyandra Zephyr and District 15’s Latonia Caesar in first and second respectively.
Off a slow start Myles clocked in at 27.40s, while Zephyr dominated the race off an easy 26.70s winning time. Caesar was third with a 27s timing.
Following her race a mystified Myles shared that she just didn’t know what went wrong, having aimed to defeat Zephyr Myles admitted that she lost sight of her goal since Zephyr started out behind her.
In the girls 20 category, Carto complemented her 100m Wednesday night win with a take of the 200m in 26.7s, to lead ahead of District 10’s Leanna Fields who finished in 27.1s. The under-16 category was won by District 10’s Lanience Dennis, who had also won her 100m the night before.
Dennis shared that she is overwhelmed by her feat, and is ecstatic that she accomplished what she had set out to do.
On the boys side, Chavez Ageday ruled the under 18 200m with a 22.7s finish and Carlwyn Collins won the boys under 20 event in 23.1s.
In the girls under 18 1500m Jevina Straker was once again settled to a second place position by Doretta Wilson, while in the under 20 category Carlissa Atkinson was disqualified from her first place finish for cutting in on the inside of the field to pass another athlete. This gave the race to District 13’s Tisha Grimes while District 9’s Susan Ignacio was upgraded to a second.
And in field events on Wednesday District 11’s Shakeem Gentle reconfigured the record for the boys under 16 high jump event, when he cleared a height of 180cm to expunge the 174m record set Carlon Pitt in 2007.
Meanwhile, District 11’s boys’ under-20 shot put defending champion Hilton Moore was dethroned as his 10.88m throw was outclassed by that of District 3’s Troy Lewis, whose best throw covered a distance of 10.96m. Moore came in way down in third after his throw was also overpowered by District 10’s Godfrey La Rose and his 10.93m best throw.
