A man who stole a quantity of items from a woman was on Thursday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment when he made his appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Roger Samuels admitted that on November 3 he stole from the person of Beverley Julio one shoulder bag, a cell phone, a quantity of jewellery and cash valued $75,000.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey in giving the facts of the case said that on the day in question the virtual complainant was walking when Samuels rode up beside her on a bicycle and relieved her of the articles mentioned in the charge.
The acting chief magistrate told the defendant that the offence carries a maximum term of imprisonment for five years.
In his response to the court, the defendant said that it was indeed he who had done the criminal act. He then begged for lenience. He was sentenced to a term of imprisonment for 18 months.
