Region 5 students who excelled at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination were rewarded for their hard work yesterday.
At an awards ceremony hosted by the Education Department at the Lachmansingh Primary School Annex, Regional Chairman Harrinarine Baldeo urged the students to make the most of their youth “where education is concerned.” The chairman joined with Regional Education Officer Urlene Crandon to congratulate the students for their hard work. Baldeo told them that “the trophies are tokens to remind you of your achievements and you should use them as inspiration….” He also expressed appreciation to the teachers for bringing the students to that level and noted that their [teachers’] rewards would be “self-satisfaction.”
The top CSEC students were; Sabrina Dookie who topped the region, Alex Haynes, Jewel Nunes, Esther Moonsammy Christine Alphanso and Muneshwar Baskarran of Novar Primary.
Students of Bygeval Secondary who were awarded were: Joshua Singh, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Gale Ann Richmond and Marissa Smart.
Students who received awards for NGSA were: Renuka Ramdat of Novar Primary, who topped the region and other students from Novar; Dinesh Kissoon, Saudia Jaikarran and Zinnasha Williams. Other NGSA students who were awarded were Marlon Persaud of Augsburg, Ravindra Oudit and Brandon Lee Steward of Lachmansingh Primary, Anthony Henry and Brandon Tulsi of Cotton Tree and Sandhya Persaud of Zealand Primary.
Trophies were also given out to schools for emerging winners of activities held during education month. Fort Wellington Secondary copped the top prize for debating; Rosignol Secondary for dramatic and choral poetry and prepared speech; and Bygeval Secondary won prizes for impromptu speech and story-telling. Trophies were also awarded to the Bush Lot Secondary and No. 29 Primary for having the most child-friendly schools. Two teachers, Shamina Charran of Novar Primary and Melissa Ross of No. 29 Primary were also presented with Teacher of the Year awards while a few retired head teachers were presented with plaques for their dedicated services.
