A Rupununi farmer accused of stabbing his wife in her back with an arrow was yesterday remanded to prison on a wounding charge.
Dowdin Clement, of South Rupununi, pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful and malicious wounding when it was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
According to the charge, on October 31 at Rupununi, Clement unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm to Mary Edwin.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford, in giving the facts of the case, told the court that Clement went home under the influence of alcohol and was approached by Edwin, who tried to caution him about his drinking habits.
According to Telford, Clement became annoyed and a heated argument soon ensued, which led to him reaching for an arrow, with which he stabbed Edwin in her back.
Telford informed the court that Edwin is still hospitalized and remains in a serious condition.
As a result, he objected to the accused being granted bail.
The unrepresented Clement was later remanded to prison until December 7, when the case is to be called at the Lethem Magistrates’ Court.
