– but also notes thousands of success stories
The Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO) says it is extremely distressed at the recent upsurge in cases of maternal deaths which appear to have been the result of negligence by medical personnel but the body also noted that there are thousands and thousands of success stories by those who have received treatment at these institutions.
The WPO in a press release on Wednesday observed that there are some pregnancies which are very risky and often it is difficult to predict the outcome although the necessary steps are taken. However, the WPO added, from the reports given it seems as if some of the recent maternal deaths could have been avoided if due care and attention was given at the appropriate time.
The women’s arm of the ruling People’s Progressive Party acknowledged that there are cases where negligence and bad interpersonal relationships have given members of the public enough to complain about but it still felt that the health institutions have been providing a valuable service to the people of Guyana.
The WPO pointed out that the Health Ministry has expended billions of dollars to improve, upgrade and expand the medical facilities and services throughout the country and improvements have taken place countrywide at the public hospitals where the majority of people will attest to the usage of the facilities.
Meanwhile, the WPO is calling on the Ministry of Health and the officials in charge of health institutions to “ensure the highest level of service from all personnel and where necessary take appropriate actions to remove the bad apples.”
And the organization is hoping also that “these recent tragedies will provide for a rethink about the loopholes in the administration of health services as well as more training for nurses and doctors who are required to take and make life threatening decisions continuously.”
In concluding, the WPO empathized with the families of all those young women who have suffered and urged those responsible to ensure that negligence and inaction should not cause more mothers to lose their precious lives.
