Dear Editor,
I refer to the horrific accident which claimed twelve lives approximately two weeks ago. Exactly how many more lives will it take? By that I mean, how many more precious lives do we have to lose? We all know we cannot afford another one, far less another few dozen!
Nothing, not one single thing has been done, or at the very least been heard of, thus far. It seems as if the case has been put to rest, just like the twelve precious souls who perished so senselessly.
What would move this government to implement the law and make it mandatory for all public transportation, ie minibuses, taxis and trucks (some being piloted by irresponsible drivers who are killing our people) to be equipped with what I’ve recently learnt is called a ‘governor.’ This is a device that is attached to the accelerator of a vehicle which prevents it from being driven at killer speed. Once this is done, the police will have ample time to focus more attention on the private car drivers. Until then, however, it is likely that more mangled bodies will be strewn along our roadways and parapets.
So I ask the pressing question once more. How long will it take? And after how many more deaths? The authorities should look into this matter immediately and pass the appropriate law in Parliament soon – better yet, now!
Yours faithfully,
Zelina McDoom-Mann
