—captures Valladares Trophy
Fullbore captain Mahendra Persaud yesterday picked up from where he left off at this year’s Commonwealth Games by winning the first two stages of the Queensway-sponsored Guyana National Rifle Shooting Association Fullbore national championships at Timehri Rifle Ranges.
At the end of the first Day, Persaud through splendid shooting, had won both the 300 and 500 yards ranges and with them the day’s Grand Aggregate.
Persaud distinguished himself from the field by shooting the only “possible” for the day a 35 with three V-bulls at the 300 yards range.
His pinpoint shooting continued at the next stage which saw him carting off the Valladares Trophy which is shot for at 500 yards with a score of 49 and six V-bulls.
Current Caribbean Full-bore, defending national champion and Commonwealth Games marksman Ransford Goodluck is second in the day’s aggregate.
Goodluck placed second to Persaud at the 300 yard range after shooting 34 with 4 V-bulls.
A resurgent Lennox Braithwaite, himself a former national champion, was third at the 300 and 500 yard ranges.
Braithwaite is also in third place on the day’s Grand Aggregate.
GuyanaNRA secretary, Ryan Sampson, was second to Persaud at the 500 yard ranges shooting a 49 with five V-bulls.
Sampson was pipped to the Valladares Trophy by Persaud by a single V-bull.
In the “O” Class category, Peter Persaud leads after winning at 300 and 500 yards.
He is also leading the day’s Grand Aggregate with scores of 33 and one V-bull and 44 respectively.
He is followed by Lieutenant Colonel Terrence Stuart who placed second at the two ranges shooting 29:1 and 43:1. He is also second to Persaud in the day’s Grand Aggregate.
The championships continue today with the riflemen competing at the 300, 600 and 900-yard ranges. The Fields (Richard and Dylan) are expected to join the competition, which ends tomorrow, from today.
