Dear Editor,
Each day when I open the daily newspapers there is at least one article that makes me feel as if I have stepped through the looking glass and I am in a land where up is down and wrong is right. But today takes the cake. Did I really read correctly that Dr Madan Rambarran Head of Medical Services at the Georgetown Public Hospital said the following with regard to convicted child sex offender Vishwamintra Persaud’s sexual abuse of a child?
“In my best opinion I don’t believe that he poses a risk. The evidence is that the incident for which he was convicted relates to one child. It is not as if there is a pattern of molestation of children; at least that is the information that we have.”
Dr Rambarran is saying that he feels that sexually abusing a child is fine as long as the perpetrator confines his abuse to that one child. I am outraged and I am waiting to see how the medical council will rule on this issue and how the Georgetown Public Hospital, the Ministry of Health and all Guyanese parents respond.
Yours faithfully,
