Eight matches, eight winners, eights losers. That was the story of the second night of the Guinness Greatest of de Street, Futsal competition at the East Ruimveldt Community Centre Court Friday night.
The other 16 of the 32 registered teams took to the battle arena and executed well-contested games but in the end it was the better teams that prevailed.
In the first four games Queen Street – Tiger Bay trounced Tarrawkabra 4 – 0, Kitty defeated Leopold Street 2 – 1, West Front Road defeated Tucville Big Yard 5 – 2 and Stevedore Housing Scheme sank Durban Street 3 – 0. After the break, Broad Street ‘B’ disposed of Bent Street 4 – 1, Laing Aveune outplayed Alexander Village 3 – 2, East La Penitence sank Punt Trench 5 – 0 and East Front Road defeated Festival City 4 – 0. The competition continues tomorrow night with another eight matches to be contested at the Burnham Court from 6pm. Tuesday night, eight more matches will be played at the Cultural Centre Tarmac from the same time.
On Friday night the spectators filled the arena to witness Rensford Coldridge and Rawle Jones scoring two goals each to oust Tarrawkabra.
In the second match, Kitty’s Anthony Sanko (6th) and Jermaine Denhard (11th) led the way against Leopold Street whose D. Williams was the lone scorer. A double from West Front Road’s Michael Pedro (third and seventh) and a goal each from his team mates Michael Oie, Randolph Wagner and Ola Pedro, were enough to overshadow Aubrey Peters’ double for Tucville Big Yard.
Quason Winter scored in the ninth and 11th minutes for Stevedore Housing Scheme and was supported by Leroy Parks who scored a 19th minute goal to help put away Durban Street in their match up.
Match five saw Broad Street’s Rocky Gravesande and Shawn Smith scoring twice while Terrence Adams supported with a goal to dispose of Bent Street whose lone goal was scored by Gavin Wilson.
Laing Avenue’sJovan Mackenzie, Gregory Dent and Ron Tudor scored second half goals to outdo the Alexander Village team whose goals came from Shem Porter and Sheldon Gorrick also in the second half.
Clayon Forrester led the East La Penitence attack with a brace against Punt Trench as national striker Devon Millington, Sheldon Layne and Lloyd Barrow also chipped in with goals.
The final game saw East Front Road leading by three goals in the first half against Festival City then they put the issue beyond doubt in the second half with the final goal.
