Mervin Williams, the prisoner who was shot in his attempt to escape from lawful custody outside the Camp Street Prisons on November 11, was today sentenced to two years imprisonment by Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
This sentence will run consecutively with another for three years on a drug offence.
A senior police officer had told Stabroek News that the shot prisoner was sentenced to three years in jail for trafficking in narcotics on November 11 and then tried to flee from outside of the prison.
The officer explained that his handcuffs were being removed by a policeman outside the prison when he “push the police aside and started to run”.
The senior officer told this newspaper that ranks of the police patrol that had escorted the prison van then gave chase discharging three rounds.
