The Hindu Society of the Berbice Sri Krishna Mandir at Gay Park Greater New Amsterdam presented over 700 food hampers to less fortunate families for the Diwali celebrations.
This is the sixth year that the mandir has had a “Diwali seva” in which it gave out food hampers to mark the occasion and to bring cheer to unfortunate children and needy adults.
A release from the mandir stated that the ‘seva’ (selfless service) is the brainchild of its President, Pandit Rajin Balgobind. The hampers were made up of one week’s supply of grocery items and goodies.
Funds are generated in the United States by Pandit Balgobind from mostly Guyanese supporters and well wishers.
According to the release, the recipients look forward to receiving the hampers “which bring smiles to their faces and sometimes tears.”
It said too that the hampers are always “happily received” with “praises and gratitude” to the president and committee members of the mandir.
