Attorney-at-law Fabayo Azore was sworn in as a temporary magistrate at a ceremony hosted at the Prime Minister’s office on Monday.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Prime Minister Samuel Hinds congratulated Azore on her appointment, saying government was grateful that she had accepted the post. He urged her to commit herself to her task without fear or favour, adding that the post can sometimes be very challenging.
In his congratulatory remarks Chief Justice Ian Chang encouraged Azore to focus on the evidence presented to her, the laws of procedures and the substantive laws. He added that the discretion of a magistrate resides essentially in penalty.
GINA said the appointment is actually a probationary period after which Azore will be appointed magistrate. Director of Public Prosecutions Shalimar Ali-Hack and Azore’s relatives also attended the ceremony.
Azore graduated from the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2007. She has served at the DPP’s Chambers as a prosecutor, during which she was attached to courts in Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice, as well as the Full Court.
