Vendor Jason Adams, 20, of Rasville Squatting Area, was on Friday placed on $250,000 bail after he denied a charge that he committed a $3.9M break and enter and larceny.
Appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Adams pleaded not guilty to the charge, denying that between November 9 and 10 at Georgetown, he broke and entered the store of Shing De Ling and stole a television, a quantity of cell phones, a number of wrist watches, a quantity of umbrellas and other items valued $3.9M.
Attorney Euclin Gomes, who represented Adams, asked for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he had no antecedents, posed no risk of flight, had a fixed address and had been cooperating with the police investigation. The prosecution had no objections to the bail application but requested that the sum be substantial.
Adams was later ordered to return to court on January 5 for statements.
Meanwhile, Joseph Phillip was separately charged for the offence of receiving the articles that Adams allegedly stole. The allegation against Phillip is that between November 9 and 10 he received 20 umbrellas, valued $200,000, knowing same to be stolen or unlawfully obtained.
Phillip, of 650 East Ruimveldt, entered a not guilty plea to the charge when it was read to him on Friday by Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry.
The unrepresented Philip begged to be placed on reasonable and the prosecution had no objection. Phillip was later granted bail in the sum of $50,000. He was also ordered to return to court on January 5 for statements.
