Mervin Williams, the prisoner who in his bid to escape custody earlier this month was shot, was yesterday back in court and earned himself an additional two-year prison sentence.
“I din mean to do it meh worship! I de just confused and frustrated at the time!” was the exclamation from the defendant who accepted that on November 11, being in the lawful custody of Police Corporal Annand Persaud outside the Georgetown Prison he escaped lawful custody. Williams had just been sentenced to three years jail on a trafficking charge.
In a plea for lenience, Williams expressed remorse for his action, noting that there would be no such recurrence.
Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry before whom the prisoner appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court told the man that he would be sentenced to an additional two years behind bars for the present offence.
“Ah dun get sentence three years for the cannabis meh worship, leh dis charge work in nah,” he asked unsuccessfully.
Despite his pleas to be granted a concurrent prison term, Williams was denied this request by the magistrate who firmly told him, “They will run consecutively and not concurrently.”
