Region Three Chairman Julius Faerber told Stabroek News on Friday that most of the road works are to still to be completed but he noted that repairs are part of a programme the regional administration is pursuing. Leguan residents told Stabroek News during a recent visit to the island that most of the road works are still to be completed. It was also noted that a contractor who was recently awarded a $10M contract, carried out works but most of the areas covered remain in an impassable state.
Faerber noted that the regional administration has provided some $4M in crusher run material to Leguan and a similar sum to the authorities at Wakenaam to undertake road works.
The roads on the island have continued to be a main area of concern and according to the residents, in time motorists will be forced to stop travelling to sections of Leguan. One minibus operator told this newspaper during a recent visit that he has already decided not to venture into certain areas around the island since he has had to spend thousands of dollars effecting repairs to his minibus.
Mohammed Haniff, a farmer of Success on the island, stated that the roads at Leguan have been in a treacherous state for most of the last decade, and he argued that the Regional Democratic Council has displayed a “lax” attitude towards upgrading the roads.
Haniff said that a contractor was recently paid some $10M to carry out works to the main roads on the island but he noted that, “all the company do was dig up the road and lef it”. Another motorist noted that several loads of stone, which are currently in front of the RDC building at Enterprise, were to be utilized for road works. However, there had been no word from the authorities on when works will be undertaken.
