The man, a resident told Stabroek News, has since been taken into police custody.
Reports reaching this newspaper said that sometime after 1 pm on Tuesday the man armed himself with a hammer and was allegedly about to attack his grandfather.
When Ethel Andrew saw her son about to attack her father, Stabroek News learnt, she intervened and attempted to make peace.
However, her son allegedly turned on her and dealt a single blow to her head with the hammer. Andrew collapsed after she was hit and succumbed to the wound a short time later.
The circumstances which led to the man allegedly attempting to attack his grandfather are unclear.
Andrew’s son, Stabroek News learnt, is not a resident of Sand Creek. The man had recently gone into the area to visit his now dead mother and other relatives there.
Commander of Police E&F Division, Assistant Commissioner David Ramnarine confirmed that he had received a report about the incident.
At about 8.30 pm on Tuesday, Ramnarine said, the Sand Creek Toshao (village captain) contacted him.
The Toshao, Ramnarine said, told him that “a son appears to have murdered his mother by hitting her in the head”. He added that there was limited information available to him at the time so he would prefer not to comment further.
A team of police investigators, Ramnarine further reported, was dispatched to Sand Creek at around 5 am yesterday.
Depending on the condition of the trail and the mode of transportation available to the investigators, he explained, it would take the team four to six hours to get to Sand Creek from Lethem.
Andrew’s body would have had to be moved from Sand Creek to Lethem before it could be stored in a mortuary. Just after 6.30pm the body still had not reached Lethem.
