Essequibo was again routed for a paltry score in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior four-day tournament at the Blairmont Community Centre ground yesterday.
The team from the Cinderella County only managed to score 127 runs from 50.3 overs as Berbice and West Indies A leg spinner Devendra Bishoo ripped through the Essequibians with 5-34 from his 19 overs.
The defending champions in reply to Essequibo’s score were 96-2 from 23 overs when stumps were raised yesterday.
Maxie de Young and Narsingh Deonarine are the not out batsmen on 42 and 17. Pacer Ronsford Beaton (1-18) and Rayon Thomas (1-28) were the successful bowlers, who accounted for the wickets of Sewnarine Chattergoon (23) and Richard Ramdeen (5) respectively.
Earlier, when the Essequibians, who are languishing in the cellar position without a point, took the crease they showed great purpose with a half century first wicket stance of 51 but it went downhill from there. Their batsmen struggled to compose a meaningful partnership as they lost wickets at a rapid rate.
Two wickets fell when the score was 93 (5-93) and two more at 103 (8-103) before they folded at 127.
Apart from Kenzo Baksh (28), Jason Heyliger (28) and Norman Fredericks (24), no other batsman reached 20. Bishoo received support from West Indies under-19 fast bowler Keon Joseph, medium pacer Esaun Crandon and off spinner Narsingh Deonarine who returned figures of 2-33 (15), 2-54 (15) and 1-3 (1.3) respectively.
Meanwhile, Demerara and the Rest Team will take to the field today at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground. Manager of the Demerara team Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis said on Wednesday that his team is looking to continue its winning ways.
He said that he will not take anything away from the Rest Team, which held the five-time defending champions to a draw last week in Berbice, since all of the players are eligible to make the Guyana team. According to Adonis his side will be looking to play positive cricket and to ensure his team maintains the lead going into their final match against Berbice.
