Softball fans turned up in their numbers on Sunday for three matches, including the first female match, the Guyana Floodlights Softball Association hosted at Heido Park at Pine Ground, Mahaicony.
According to a press release the Trophy Angels defeated the Mahaicony Females by 10 wickets, at the first female match played at the venue. The Mahaicony Females batted first and were restricted to 57 all-out while Shridevi, bowling for the victors, top-scored with 24 and Jenile Hero took three wickets for four runs. The Angels wiped out the total in 5.3 overs with Renita Awad scoring 28 not-out and Keisha Lall, 24 not-out.
In addition, Floodlights A defeated Heido Squad by 17 runs. Toolsie Sahadeo hit an entertaining 112 in a total of 192 for 9 off 20 overs. Heido Squad was restricted to 175 all-out due to good bowling from Rakesh Goverdan, Petama Maharaj, Rahaman Khan and Ramchand Ragbir who took two wickets each. Derick Singh made 44 for the home team.
In the third game Floodlights B was restricted to 144 for eight off 20 overs. Richard Persaud (47) and Rajin Mohamed (27) were the top scorers. Vijay Singh bowled brilliantly taking six wickets for 14 runs for Mahaicony Combined but their efforts were soon thwarted by Dharam Persaud and Mike Singh who scored four wickets each and the home team eventually made 112 all-out.
The Association also donated $175,000 to the Macouba Mandir after the games. The matches were sponsored by Royal Woodworking, P&P Insurance, Narine Trading and Jai Achar, the release said and spectators benefited from gifts from Mike’s Pharmacy, Rohan Auto Spares and Trophy Stall. The Association also extended gratitude to Indrachand Bhagwandin for making all the arrangements at the ground and admitted him as a member.
