Marlon Roberts, 21, was remanded to prison yesterday after he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates’ Court charged with the murder of his older brother, stemming from a row over $1,000.
Roberts was not required to plead when the charge was read to him by Magistrate Nyasha Hatmin. It is alleged that on November 12, at Den Amstel, he murdered Gregory Roberts.
Although the case jacket was with the court’s clerk, it took several hours before the charge was read to the accused since the post mortem had not been completed. Prosecutor Krishendatt Ramana told the court that the file was incomplete since it was missing the post mortem report nevertheless they would go ahead with instituting the charge.
As the charge was read, members of the Roberts family who gathered in the courtroom could be heard sobbing.
Marlon Roberts was remanded and will make his next court appearance on January 12.
Reports are that around 8:30 in the evening on the day in question, the Roberts brothers were involved in an argument over $1,000. Marlon allegedly threw the money on the ground and this further angered his brother and they became involved in a scuffle. He then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Gregory, killing him.
The two shared a home at 92 Den Amstel Public Road.
