Suriname’s female volleyball team yesterday spiked their way to a 3-1 victory over Guyana in the first volleyball game of the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) last night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
It was the first loss for Guyana who flattered to deceive after winning the first game 25-23.
They then went under 9-25, 8-25 and 13-25 in the next three games.
The athleticism of the Suriname females proved advantageous in the long run as the Suriname lasses went on a spiking rampage, led by their lead spiker, Sheriffa Purperhant.
Purperhant had the Guyanese players diving unsucessfully to bring back her sizzling smacks from Suriname’s side of the net.
Guyana lost the second and third games by wide margins as
Purperhant continued to outspike the competition.
In the fourth set she effortlessly climbed for the sets placed near to the nets by her teammates and blasted the ball continuously out of reach for the Guyanese.
Guyana was very competitive in the early periods of the fourth and final set, which saw the score tied at 9-9.
But they were eventually routed by the Surinamese 25-13.
In female basketball, Suriname were yet again a dominant force as they ousted French Guiana 51-39 in the curtain raiser.
Suriname shot their way into an early lead and controlled the game from the first quarter through to the final period.
Suriname’s leading scorer was Naaden Cheyenne with 16 points. Parsdran Stefane netted three baskets from beyond the arc for Suriname in her 15, while Nagareth Baunor played well to accumulate her 11 points.
Only Joseph Marie Estelle managed to obtain double figures for French Guiana with her 10 points.
Guyana will take on Suriname and Frenh Guiana in the cycling events this morning on the East Coast Demerara.
