The power company this morning reported that some of its employees who are members of the union NAACIE have gone on strike over wages without following the required procedure.
In a press release, the Guyana Power and Light says that without notice members of the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE), particularly the transmission and distribution and generation departments, went on strike from 7 this morning.
GPL and the union, the release said, have been meeting over the past weeks in relation to salaries and allowances for 2010 and while there has been progress no agreement has been reached.
The power company said that NAACIE is fully aware of the procedure which has to be followed for industrial action in an essential service. The power company warned: “persons involved in this illegal action are aware of the options available to GPL”.
Action has been taken, GPL said, to limit the disruption to GPL’s service, the release said.
