Dear Editor,
The East Bank junction at the Demerara Harbour Bridge needs to be marked by white or yellow lines to assist drivers entering the bridge from the North, and leaving the bridge to go South. With the absence of traffic lights and the assistance of the traffic police there is much uncertainty and confusion embarking on these two routes.
There should be a line separating two parallel lanes for vehicles leaving the bridge with one lane for North bound vehicles and the other on its right for South Bound vehicles. There should also be lanes for vehicles entering the bridge from the North via Eastern carriageway. There is not much difficulty for vehicles entering the bridge from the South, but still they must be guided by road markings.
The South bound vehicles usually experience difficulties to cross the road for the Eastern carriageway. Motorists turning to the bridge from the Eastern carriageway have no direct lane to stop and wait for traffic from the North to pass. Similarly, the vehicles leaving the bridge to go South have no special lane to stop and wait for the road to clear.
I am a commuter who drives over the bridge regularly and have noticed the confusion of the drivers who are not guided by any marked lane or white arrows. In many cases they ended up doing brazen acts much to the annoyance of the drivers that are immediately in-front or behind. I hereby urge the traffic authorities to do something about that situation urgently.
Yours faithfully,
