A man accused by the police of robbing another of a gold chain and other items was on Friday admitted to bail in the sum of $75,000 after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on November 10 at Georgetown, Keon Beckles along with other persons robbed Shawn Tait of a quantity of cash, one cell phone, and a bank card valued $27,000.
Beckles, a painter of 128 ‘C’ Field Sophia entered a not guilty plea.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day of the incident, the virtual complainant (VC) who was walking along Water Street was approached by the accused who demanded that he hand over the items mentioned in the charge.
According to Telford, overcome by fear, the complainant complied with the order given by the accused. The defendant then made an escape bid but was apprehended by public-spirited persons.
The prosecutor told the court that the police were later summoned to the scene and after conducting a search, the cell phone was found in the defendant’s pants’ pocket.
Beckles was granted bail in the sum of $75,000 and ordered to return to court on December 20.
However, he made a request for a reduction in bail, explaining that he could not afford the sum ordered; his request was denied.
