Dear Editor,
Further to my letter published Sat Nov 20th, asserting that the demolished Bureau of Statistics building was not originally from the MacKenzie Terminal – the source of the misdirection has now been identified. In the blog to my letter with 20 comments, a reader has shared the two pictures which appeared on Facebook, Feb 2008 with an incorrect caption which created the controversy.
The caption in 2008 incorrectly stated that the picture with the Grumman and two planes in front the airport was the Mackenzie Airport. I categorically refute this as there was no Terminal at the Mackenzie Airport at any time in its existence – and furthermore the demolished building was originally constructed slightly before 1955.
It was there definitely when I worked at the Chief Secretary’s Office June 15, 1955 to Feb 1, 1960.
Thanks Stabroek News, for the opportunity to correct this minor but important aspect of our history – which must be preserved accurately.
Ya think it easy…
Yours faithfully,
Godfrey Chin
