National swimmer Ronaldo Rodrigues lost his 50m backstroke race to Travis Henry to miss out on a clean sweep of all 10 of the events that he participated in at the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) National Championships that ended last Sunday at the Castellani Swimming Pool.
According to reports from GASA, Rodrigues who participated in the boys 13 – 14 category won nine first place positions and was second in the 50m backstroke.
Meanwhile, among the girls Britany van Lange got seven first place positions, four second place spots and a third.
Rodrigues won the 50m freestyle (27.34s), 100m freestyle (1:00.02s) and 200m freestyle (2:12.95s) events ahead of Henry.
Rodrigues also brushed aside the competition put forth by Henry in the 50m breaststroke, where he finished in 34.66s to beat Henry’s 40.18s finish. However in the 50m backstroke, Rodrigues’ 33.79s finish was not enough to outclass the 32.45 clocked by Henry.
Rodrigues also won the 200m breaststroke (2:46.69s), 50m butterfly (29.76s) and the 100m butterfly (1:09.29s) unchallenged.
In the 100m breaststroke Rodrigues’ closest competition came from Keenan Sanmoogan who did 1:36.05s but this was no match for Rodrigues’ 1:13.47s.
Sanmoogan also lost to Rodrigues in the 200m individual medley. Sanmoogan finished in 3:25.08s, while Rodrigues ruled with a 2:31.82s finish.
For van Lange her main competition came from Goodwill Games silver medalist Athena Gaskin and Soroya Simmons. Van Lange did her usual take of the freestyle events finishing 30.14 in the 50m freestyle, 1:06.10s in the 100m freestyle; 2:21.56s in the 200m freestyle; and in the 400m freestyle she finished in 5:09.34s. Gaskin was second in all of these events.
Van Lange also won the 100m butterfly (1:22.57s), the 50m backstroke (35.06s) and the 200m backstroke (3:08.73s).
However, Gaskin won the 100m breaststroke ( 42.57s) and 200m breaststroke (3:16.66s), ahead of van Lange, while Simmons defeated van Lange in the 100m backstroke with her 1:15.60s finish and Gaskin came third in this event.
Gaskin also had a better performance than van Lange in the 50m butterfly, clocking 35.36s to take first place. Simmons got second off a 35.47s finish while van Lange was third in 35.80s.
In the boys 15 – 17 category Jaime Jabar won his 50m freestyle (26.81s), 100m freestyle (59.62s), 50m breaststroke (33.68s), 100m breaststroke (1:14.00s), 200m breaststroke (2:43.88s), and the 50m butterfly (28.98s).
