Three men charged with assaulting their wives were placed on a bond to keep the peace for a year by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo in the New Amsterdam Court on Monday.
The magistrate stipulated, however, that should the men breach their bond they will each be sentenced to one year imprisonment.
Ramesh Sukra of Hampshire Village, Corentyne, Suresh Ramdyal of Canefield Settlement, and Mohan Premchand of Fort Ordnance, both East Canje Villages, admitted inflicting lashes on their spouses for various reasons.
The men were each remanded to prison and on returning to court on Monday expressed regret over the incidents and promised that there will not be any recurrences “as jail life nah nice.”
On November 13 following a misunderstanding between Sukra and his wife at their home, she went to her father-in-law’s residence a short distance away to lodge a complaint. However, her husband who became annoyed removed a wooden bar from his bicycle and dealt her several lashes across her body, causing her to suffer injuries. She was subsequently treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital and a medical certificate was issued.
Four days later, Ramdyal’s reputed wife Sherry Brijnauth left home to purchase chicken from a village shop. She was accosted by her husband who demanded to know who had given her permission to leave the home, but before she could respond he picked up a piece of wood from nearby and gave her several lashes about her body. The couple have been together for thirteen years.
In the other case, Premchand on November 19 was under the influence of alcohol when his common-law wife Hemilie Kristar visited his mother’s home at Betsy Ground, another East Canje location.
On seeing her, he ordered her to leave the yard while pushing her to the ground and slapping her in the process.
The defendant apparently was not satisfied with the initial assault so he grabbed a wooden picket from the fenced yard and lashed her about the body, resulting in injuries.
The defendant’s sister who witnessed the beating rescued the abused woman who was then treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
