Knockout round teams decided
The preliminary round of the Guinness Greatest of the Street futsal competition concluded on Monday night at the Albouystown Basketball Court where four teams recorded victories in the four scheduled matches.
So far, 14 of the 16 teams that have made it to the knockout round are Albouystown ‘A’, West Back Road, North- Last Entrance, Sophia, West Front Road, Queen Street Tiger Bay, East Front Road, Broad Street B, East La Penitence, Stevedore Housing Scheme, Cultural Centre Tarmac, Castello Housing Scheme, Hope Street Tiger Bay and Norton Street Werken Rust.
Monday night saw Alexander Village defeating Kitty 3 – 1, Broad Street ‘B’ getting past East Front Road 2 -1, East La Pentience trouncing Stevedore Housing Scheme 3 – 0 and Queen Street Tiger Bay winning against West Front Road 4 – 3. The night concluded with Queen Street Tiger Bay and West Front Road contesting one of the most nail-biting encounters of this year’s tournament.
Dennis Calderia drew first blood for Tiger Bay in the fourth minute then Ola Pedro equalized in the sixth for the opposition. However, Calderia scored in the eighth minute to complete his double and regain the lead for his team.
The very next minute Michael Oie found the equalizer for West Front Road to once again draw the game going into halftime. At the resumption Rensford Coldridge scored for Tiger Bay as well as Oie to keep the game deadlocked at 3 -3.
Four minutes later Coldridge found the back of the net again to settle the score and lead Tiger Bay to victory.
Match one saw one of the country’s top futsal players, Leon Yaw leading Alexander Village to victory with a hat-trick against Kitty even as they drew first blood in the fourth minute when Jermaine Denhart scored.
In the Broad Street versus East Front Road battle Terrence Lewis and Jason Silas scored for Broad Street to get them past the opposition that only scored one goal.
Finally, Devon Millington played another major part in another East La Penitence victory as he scored a double along with the help of Dexter Layne who pitched in with a goal to help comfortably defeat Stevedore Housing Scheme.
The knockout round begins tomorrow.
